Draw Your First Friendly Dog

Step 1: Draw the Head and Ears

Start with a large vertical oval in the center of your page—this will be the dog’s head. Then, add two rounded ear shapes on either side of the oval. These should curve slightly outward and downward, like floppy cartoon dog ears. Keep the lines smooth and simple to maintain a playful, beginner-friendly style.

Step 2: Add the Facial Features

Inside the oval head shape, draw two large, round eyes spaced evenly apart. Make them expressive by adding small circles inside for highlights—this gives your dog a friendly, lively look. Below the eyes, sketch a rounded snout that slightly overlaps the bottom of the head oval. Add a small oval nose at the tip of the snout.

Step 3: Refine the Expression and Details

Now let’s polish the personality! Add gentle curves above the eyes for eyebrows—these help convey emotion. You can tilt them slightly for a curious or cheerful look. Then, define the smile with a smooth upward curve beneath the snout, and add a small line at each end to suggest cheeks or dimples. Color in the nose solid black and erase the guide oval lines.

Step 4: Sketch the Body

Extend your drawing by adding a rounded body beneath the head. Keep it simple—draw a soft oval or bean shape that suggests the dog is sitting. The final image will look like a dog in a Christmas stocking.

Step 5: Add the Legs to Create a Sitting Pose

Now that the head and body are in place, it’s time to sketch the legs to show your dog sitting:

  • Front Legs: From the bottom of the body, draw two straight vertical lines curving slightly outward. These should start just below the chest and end in small rounded paws. Keep the spacing even and the lines smooth—this gives the dog a relaxed, balanced look.
  • Hind Legs: Tuck the back legs underneath the lower portion of the body. Draw two curved elongated shapes on both sides of the body.

Step 6: Refine the Legs for a Balanced Sitting Pose

In this step, focus on shaping the legs to clearly show the dog is sitting:

  • Front Legs: From where the foremost front leg connects to the body, extend the leg upward towards the head. Bow out the lines near the top to accentuate the leg muscle.
  • Hind Legs: For the exposed back leg, draw a C shape slanted downward to form the back leg muscle. Draw the heel line slightly into the body to give the heel its shape. Erase any excess body lines to make the body look natural.
  • PAWS: Draw 3 arcing lines on both front paws to indicate toes. Draw 2 on the exposed back leg and 1 on the hidden one.
Step 7: Add the Tail

To complete the dog’s seated pose, draw a gently curved tail emerging from behind one of the hind legs. Keep it soft and rounded—like a loose “S” or hook shape—that curls slightly to the side

Step 8: Adding the final touches

  • Contour Lines: Draw contour lines above the leg and on the chest to give the image some depth.
  • Whiskers: Draw a few dots on the dogs snout to indicate whiskers.

You’ve now completed a playful, cartoon-style dog drawing from head to tail, using simple shapes and clean lines. Each step built on the last, creating a friendly, approachable character perfect for beginners.
