Drawing a Sleepy Cat

Drawing a cat is a joyful way to explore curves, character, and coziness. From sleepy poses to playful whiskers, each line brings personality to life—perfect for beginners and seasoned sketchers alike. Here we’ve laid out the process of drawing this cartoonish, sleepy cat in 8 steps.

Step 1: Draw the Head

  • Start with a circle for the cat’s head.

Step 2: Add the Face

  • Draw two curved lines for closed eyes—like soft parentheses ( and ).
  • Add a small triangle for the nose near the bottom center of the head.
  • Beneath the nose, draw a wavy line for a gentle smile.
  • Optional: Add whiskers—three short lines on each side of the face.

Step 3: Draw the Ears

  • On top of the head, sketch two triangular ears with slightly rounded tips.
  • Optional: You can add a small triangle inside each ear for detail.

Step 4: Start the Body Curl

  • From the upper right side of the head, draw a large curved line that loops around to the left—like a big backwards “C” shape.
  • This will be the cat’s back and hindquarters.

Step 5: Add the Front Paws

  • Under the head, draw two small ovals or soft rectangles for the front paws, tucked in.

Step 6: Draw the Tail

  • From the back of the body, continue the drawing until you’re lined up around the center of the cats face and then curve back 180 degrees. Continue going back towards the cats back line, until you almost touch.
  • The tail should taper slightly at the end, near the back of the body.

Step 7: Add the Hind Leg and Foot

  • Near the end of the tail, draw a small quarter circle to represent the hind foot.
  • Then, at a V-like junction, draw a larger quarter circle to suggest the hind leg.

Step 8: Final Connection

  • Finally, draw a small line from the back of the front leg to the hind leg to complete the body shape.
  • And that completes your sleepy cat drawing!
